webpage is a lot like a document on your computer. The major difference
being you want this document to be seen by anyone, from anywhere, at anytime.
To accomplish this the document must be put onto a special computer called
a server.

server is a very fast computer that's constantly on and connected to the
Internet by a connection much faster than in anyone's home. This way when
many people go to your website all at once it will not slow down or lag
as your page loads.
Because the cost of a server (And the very high speed connections they
require) are extremely expensive, space on the servers are rented
out or sublet to other clients. The act of providing this service is called
hosting.
